A Healthy Halloween

We love candy as much as the next gal, but as we previously mentioned in our blog consumers spend about $2 billion on Halloween candy every year! Art of Care, Inc. believes there is much more to Halloween and we would like to present you with healthy tips to spend the spooky holiday.

 

Weight management is always a challenge, but even more so during the holidays. The secret is to count your calorie intake: did you know that it takes only an additional 100 calories a day above what you need to lead to an extra 10lb weight gain in a year?!

 

Procrastinating is usually a bad thing, right? Well, on Halloween, we encourage you to purchase your treats the day of to avoid temptation. Buy less than what you think you’ll need to avoid leftovers. If you really have a hard time with temptation choose to pass out non-candy treats like bouncy balls, spider rings, pencils, erasers, bubbles and stickers.

 

Serve a healthy dinner before going out, this way you will not be tempted to eat candy along the way. After trick-or-treating, offer a cup of warm, low fat milk with just one to make sure the blood sugar is stable before bedtime. Make a plan for you and your children regarding when and how much candy all of you can eat.

 

Stay active and take a long walk around your neighborhood; enjoy all the decorations and costumes that you see.

 

Portion control is very important. You can easily reach 100 calories with just one or two snack size treats. Choose candies that can satisfy your sweet tooth with fewer calories.

 

Always choose fun size candy bars so they have the least amount of fat and calories per serving. Choose dark chocolate versions to be healthier.

 

Remember to be safe on Halloween: avoid trick or treating alone, never go into someone’s house alone, eat only factory wrapped treats (avoid homemade treats made by strangers).

Halloween can be lots of fun when celebrated in a safe manner, so remember these tips and enjoy yourself!
