At Art of Care we enjoy a sweet treat as much as the next person, but we also know how harmful they can be to your body. With so many summer distractions it’s easy to let yourself indulge, but don’t be haunted by your sweet tooth, there are still ways to enjoy sweets without doing the damage.


If you love gummy snacks try dried fruit instead. They contain less calories and grams of sugar than any bears or worms, and have the added benefit of vitamin C, dietary fiber, and minerals. Keep in mind that dried fruit contain more calories per gram than fresh fruit. Mix with nuts to add protein and minimize your sugar intake, but also keep yourself satisfied.


If you like the creamy texture of desserts, try Greek yogurt with honey and fruits. Yogurt is packed with protein, fruit contains fiber and nutrients, and honey contains antioxidants and possesses antimicrobial properties which help you stay healthy.


If you’re craving ice cream, hold that thought! Instead just dip a banana in chocolate and stick it in the freezer. It’s a tasty treat and loaded with potassium which reduces your risk of stroke and lowers blood pressure. (Also bananas have been known to improve mood regulation).


If you don’t have the biggest sweet tooth, but still like to indulge, try cinnamon-sugar popcorn. Choose popcorn without added salt, butter or oil and prepare it as you like. Don’t worry about overdoing it on the cinnamon; research suggests that the spice may lower glucose levels in people with type 2 diabetes and pre-diabetes.


There are countless ways to enjoy sweets and still stay healthy if you just get a little creative. Do not use sugar substitute because the chemicals are more harmful to your body than sugar. Don’t think you’re in the clear just because the label says “sugar-free”, a lot of the time the substitutes are just as harmful if not more.


Keep in mind that you should always consume in moderation, candy included, and always be open to new ideas and try new things; you never know, it may become your new favorite dessert!
